I'm kidding; I know who Marco Scutaro is. But seriously, who is Marco Scutaro? What does Theo Epstein see in this guy? Is he a solid hitter? No. He has a .265 career average. Is he a power hitter? No. Just once has he hit over 10 homers in a season. Is he a run-producer? No. His career high is 60 RBIs. OK, is he a base stealer? No. He's only once topped 10 stolen bases. Theo loves these "on base" guys, what's his career OBP? Answer: .337. Not even in the top 100 among active players. His defense? Average. Until 2008, when Aaron Hill got clobbered by his teammate and missed the season due to a concussion, Scutaro was nothing but a utility guy. Did I mention he's 33 years old? What is it about Marco Scutaro that got the Red Sox General Manager thinking "we have to sign this guy; we'll give him two years guaranteed with an option for a third and toss in $12.5 million bucks for good measure ($17 million with the option)? And we'll give the Blue Jays a draft pick!" Those numbers above? The 10 homers, 10 steals, 60 RBIs? They all came last year. A career year at 33? Will you be serious!
Apparently he's a hard worker. While I appreciate anyone who goes "all out" for their team, there have been a lot of "hard workers" over the years with Scutaro's statistical pedigree who've never cracked a starting lineup, much less been given a multi-year contract at 33 years of age. Did I mention he's also a good teammate? Kevin Millar was a good teammate and nobody brought him back.

Is this why the Red Sox raised ticket prices in the offseason? So they could sign up a Joe McEwing clone to be the everyday shortstop? Is this the kind of creativity we expect from a highly intelligent GM in a weak free agent market? This is like punting on third down - it doesn't make any sense and reeks of "oh well, we tried" without even trying. Marco Scutaro is the weak link in the Boston offense; he brings little to the table defensively, and mark my words, he will be destroyed by the Boston media this summer, the minute he starts struggling like the career bench player he is. It's not Marco Scutaro's fault. Theo's done it again, folks, like a math geek falling in love with his moderately-attractive-for-a-math-teacher statistics professor. Julio Lugo Part Two.
